For hundreds of years Britain's countryside has been defined by the activities of the people who live and work on the land. Environmental stewardship is an integral quality of the country's culture and history. It is founded on an understanding of the countryside as living, working, and evolving along with its inhabitants. Britain, along with much of the rest of the world, is facing the infamous energy "tri-lemma" of rising energy costs, climate change and strains on security of supply. With about 20% of our population living in rural areas, it's vital that we find clean, sustainable ways to address this trilemma within the rural economy.
