The Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University is located at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, NY. CIESIN is part of Columbia University's Earth Institute, which houses a number of interdisciplinary centres. CIESIN's focus is information about human beings and our relationship with the natural environment. Within CIESIN is the Center for Socioeconomic Data and Applications, or SEDAC, funded by NASA and operated by CIESIN. SEDAC, in turn, runs the Center for Human Interactions in the Environment, one of 52 centres in the World Data Center System. The WDC provides access to a wide range of global environmental, geophysical and human dimensions data. CIESIN is considered an independent nongovernmental organization.
