As is well understood the Bible is a complex collection of documents, ranging from historical narrative, through prophetic and revelations to poetry and oral tradition. Whatever your view or belief it is acknowledged that the text of the Bible needs to be understood in the context of its historical setting, linguistic background and cultural context. Only some of these forms appear in the New Testament, however.
