At a time when maps of almost anywhere in the world can be retrieved online from the likes of Multimap, where we can peer down on much of the globe through eyes of Google Earth or where satellite navigation will steer us to our destination, is there still a reference role for printed maps and atlases? More specifically, is there still a role for the grand global atlas?rnDorling Kindersley would seem to think so for this is the fifth edition of their Great World Atlas which first appeared in its present form in 1999 as the World Atlas Millennium Edition and has since been produced in new editions at approximately two year intervals. And this atlas is certainly grand in size and as a project. Slipcased it measures 209 mm × 450 mm and weighs around seven kilograms.
