The literature of the Bible is notoriously complex in both form and content and, whatever individual convictions are held, cannot be ignored as a basic element in the culture, history and social development of many societies throughout the world. The Old Testament, much of which is held in common by the three major monotheistic religions, presents particularly challenging problems for the theologian, literary scholar and historian.
