African Americans in Science: An Encyclopedia of People and Progress

This book provides an overview of the contribution to science from the African American community. As would be expected by its title, the work focuses solely on the residents of North America, rather than those from the global black community. The preface notes that in many ways the work is a companion to the author's American Scientists (Carey, 2006), and that it was developed in part as a response to criticism of the coverage of African American scientists in the earlier title.rnThe set reviewed comes in two volumes. Each opens with a one page general contents listing for both volumes followed by a detailed list of entries. Volume 1 also includes a two-page preface, a comprehensive introduction to the set by the author and a chronology of African American achievements running from 1792 to 2008.
