According to Rootsweb, the "primary purpose" of this database is "to connect people so that they can help each other and share genealogical research". Rootsweb is unique in that the database entirely consists of information provided by individual genealogists. For instance, Rootsweb allows users to upload their family tree to the WorldConnect Project, a database of family trees that have been submitted by participating genealogists. Rootsweb also provides genealogists with the opportunity to post family surnames on the Rootsweb Surname List. In posting to the surname list each genealogist lists relevant dates and the migration route of the family about which they have collected information. Contact information is provided for each posting so that other genealogists can request further information from the person who posted it. Due to the nature of this database, information at Rootsweb is not updated on a regular basis, but is added as often as it is submitted by users.
