The twin subjects of family and local history have both developed rapidly since the first edition of this Companion of 1996, so a new edition is welcome. The aim of the Companion remains as a reference resource for professional scholars and amateur researchers who are working in these related fields, and to serve as a source of information for the general reader. A new edition is needed, not only to take account of the many new books and articles that have been published, but also of the increasing availability of documentary sources and other information on the Internet. The opportunity has also been taken to reorganise the Companion from a basic A-Z dictionary arrangement of entries into a two-part work, with the more substantial entries re-worked into extended essays located before the dictionary section proper. A third element, an appendix listing record offices and special collections, remains common to both editions.
