It may come as a surprise, except to people who know these things, that there few encyclopaedias devoted exclusively to American philosophy as such. Routledge claims that this new publication is the first complete one ever published, and they may well right. Even entries on "American philosophy" don't always appear in philosophy reference books - not, for example, in The Shorter Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Craig, 2005) (RR 2008/11) or in the magisterial second edition of Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Borchert, 2006) (RR 2006/297). That said, American philosophers (like Dewey or Quine or Rorty) can readily be found in them and this reveals something intriguing about American philosophy -that in a sense it is both there and not there!rnGeographically people study and teach and write about it, of course, in an increasingly professionalised way, as series like the Cambridge Companions demonstrate - without American (used here in the sense of the USA rather than North America, and certainly not of the Americas more generally still) scholarship, they would be hard-pressed for material.
