In recent years, films and television competitions have popularised all forms of dance, opening up the ballroom, the barre and the stage to amateurs and enthusiasts in the UK and America. The visual appeal of a graceful ballet or a passionate tango can inspire people to take lessons and learn the steps themselves, but there is a whole language and theory of dance behind the footwork. The Oxford Dictionary of Dance, now into a second edition containing 150 new entries, provides both a guide for the beginner and a fascinating study of "all aspects of the diverse dance world", with entries on performances, artistes, choreographers, composers and the technical terms given to dance steps.
