The main part of this book consists of an alphabetical listing of selected characters from women's historical fiction, outlining the personality, appearance and circumstances of some five hundred memorable protagonists as well as plenty "that are less well-known but worth getting to know all the same". The phrase "women's historical fiction" is interpreted loosely and ranges from serious literary works such as Hilary Mantel's Woolf Hall to popular, romance-led tales like Catherine Cookson's Tilly Trotter, taking in along the way the mysteries of Daphne du Maurier, the Ancient Rome crime romps of Lindsey Davis, and the fictionalised accounts of real events as epitomised in Philippa Gregory's The Other Boleyn Girl. All are works of female authors.
