Under the terms of the treaty of the European Union citizens of member states have the rights of freedom of movement, of residence, and of access to employment opportunities and to health and welfare services throughout member states. However, the cross-border movement of groups from one country to another in Europe is by no means purely a post-second world war phenomenon. Indeed large-scale DNA profiling aimed at identifying racial types together with archaeological evidence show that Europe was originally populated by tribes migrating from the south and east in search of hunting opportunities as the glaciers of the Ice Age began to retreat northwards.
