The justification for including skiing in the Scarecrow Historical Dictionaries of Sports series is simple: "Skiing is one of the oldest known modes of transportation, predating the wheel". A historical approach is required because, "skiing has undergone so many improvements and metamorphoses that the pioneers would hardly recognise it". The author, E. John B. Allen, is an American Emeritus Professor of History who has written nine previous books on the history of skiing and in this one he has produced a through and interesting work any ski enthusiast will enjoy dipping into.
