Psychology, as a separate discipline, has its historic roots in philosophy rather than in the natural sciences. It is still the case that a very high proportion of university psychology students come from a school background in the humanities and go in for psychology partly because they do not feel that they have enough mathematical or scientific expertise to study biology or any other hard science.
