I must confess to an initial distaste to reviewing this work: war crimes and genocide are hardly fun subjects. Indeed, are there any more depressing? Terrorism? That is in here as well! Even the compilers, freelance writer Leslie Horvitz and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Christopher Catherwood, are a touch apologetic: "It would be gratifying if this encyclopedia were mostly historical in nature [...] [but] since the original edition of this book was published in 2006, the human rights situation has continued to deteriorate in such countries as Afghanistan, China, Iran, and Russia [...]".
