Historical Dictionary of the British Monarchy

In April 2011, the world watched on television as Prince William of Wales was married. He is believed to be a direct descendant, 52 generations down the line, of Cerdic, first King of Wessex, and of Fergus, first King of Dalriada, who were both approximate contemporaries of the last Roman Emperor. This remarkable continuity explains why the Historical Dictionary of the British Monarchy is one of the largest in the Scarecrow Press series, comprising 660 entries, about three-quarters of which refer to persons or families, the others covering places, events, titles, institutions and constitutional documents significant in the history of the monarchy, together with a few miscellaneous entries such as Crown Jewels. Chronological coverage extends from the Dark Ages to 2010, the Prince's engagement being the latest reference.
