Let me start by stating that any library holding an earlier edition of this Encyclopedia must update their collection by buying this new edition. The Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics is a landmark reference work, the reference tool par excellence for poetry. As the title indicates, the coverage in this volume is encyclopedic and includes both poetry and poetics. Poetics is the theoretical and practical study of poetry. This is important because the incorporation of poetics into the encyclopedia contributes to placing this work head and shoulders above other reference resources about poetry. At this point I should also point out that this is not the sort of tool which provides information about the work of individual poets or their poetry. Instead it presents and discusses the mechanisms and contexts of poetry.
