Vasudha Dalmia, a professor of Hindi and Modern South Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkley and Rashmi Sadana, a writer and researcher based in Delhi have brought together a collection of scholarly work on the social divisions, customs, and communication in the daily life of India. The book offers a framework for understanding the rapidly moving changes that are happening as India moves from its colonial past to a member of the globalized future. Part 1 looks at the cultural contexts of this transition beginning with the changes occurring in the rural settings. Issues include education for girls, imported technologies, traditional vs modern foods and the differences between the saving and preservation of crop seed versus the more modern practice of purchasing seed at the market.
