Silent Cities in Flanders Fields: Ypres Salient & West Flanders World War Ⅰ Cemeteries

摘要

With a stream of new publications in bookshops and numerous programmes on television relating the events leading up to and the course of the First World War, few in the United Kingdom can be unaware that 2014 marks the centenary of the outbreak of that conflict. Although Britain had been involved throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in an almost continual series of conflicts to further the expansion and defence of its imperial interests, the events of World War Ⅰ, known at the time as "The Great War", remain alive in our memories, even though no participants in that conflict are now alive.
