The novel, as understood in literary terms today, is a work of narrative fiction. It is literature. It is a story, from the imagination of its author, written to provide escape and enjoyment for readers. It is a genre much studied too. Therefore, it is no surprise that the ancient novel is a genre of specific study. The ancient novel was considered, by early scholars at least, to be either a mystery text or a romance written for women. As far as they were concerned, ancient novels fell only into these two categories and were limited in their intention. Those books consisting of the classification or deserving of the title ancient novel were written, it is widely believed, between the first and fifth or sixth centuries CE. Such a vast time span, four to five hundred years, reflects the social and cultural changes in readers' tastes, their continued desire to read novels. There is also, owing to the length of time concerned, a vast array of subject matter covered by the ancient novel and yet, despite this lengthy existence, apparent sating of readers tastes and wide ranging subject coverage, it would seem that during antiquity at least there was very little discussion of the genre. This raises questions such as: who were the readers of these novels? Why and how were they reading them? Are they given little attention because they had little, if any, educational or philosophical value?.
