The Encyclopedia of Medical and Veterinary Entomology is adapted from the original text, Medical and Veterinary Entomology by Professor Douglas S. Settle. According to the publisher, Settle's text has been a standard reference book in the field since the first edition was published in 1984. The second edition followed in 1995. Although Settle passed away before this current edition was finished, he approved reorganizing the work as an encyclopedia. Much of the style and content was retained from previous editions.Medical and veterinary entomology is concerned with the role arthropods have in the spread of disease or discomfort in animals and humans. Although entomology strictly refers to six legged insects, for most works of this nature, the definition is expanded to the phylum Arthropoda, which in addition to insects, includes other terrestrial creatures such as scorpions, spiders, ticks, mites, centipedes, and millipedes.
