The Readers' Advisory Guide to Genre Blends

The Readers' Advisory Guide to Genre Blends, part of the ALA Readers' Advisory Series, provides reading recommendations and suggestions for how to talk about crosses of seven genres: adrenaline, fantasy, historical fiction, horror, mystery, romance and science fiction. Each genre is the focus of its own chapter, which introduces the genre and its appeal to readers, then explores reasons why the genre might be blended with another. Each chapter then discusses specific blends in more depth, crossing that chapter's genre with each of the other six. Three examples of each type of blend are accompanied by engaging descriptions designed to entice potential readers. After each example, two further reading paths are provided - ones that have some of the same appeal factors as the blend described, but are more typical of just one of the genres in the blend. For example, after providing an example of a horror/science fiction blend, McArdle offers a recommendation of a more traditional science fiction title, as well as a more classic horror suggestion. These reading paths would appeal not only to fans of the aforementioned horror/science fiction blend, but also to readers looking to focus more exclusively on just one of the combined genres.
