Ernest Thode has compiled a simple 233-page book of essentially three linked lists listing German newspapers published online. Thode explains that for a newspaper to be included in this list, it must have been originally published no fewer than 50 years prior to this publication. He claims that such a resource has become necessary to aid genealogical and other historical research largely because online German newspapers seem scattered about rather than having, until now, a single access point indexing what has been made available. The introduction to this index offers some sites and tools where some German newspapers and supporting materials have been made available online, including Google Books, DigiPress, Europeana and ANNO. Newspapers as a resource for historical research often offer, in addition to local and national news, information about current events, births, marriages, deaths, graduations, auctions, crimes and appointments to public offices. They often also include photographs and advertisements that might help turn a search in a new and useful direction.
