At twelve volumes The International Encyclopedia of Communication, published in 2008 and reviewed in its electronic version in these columns (RR 2009/013), is an extremely useful tool for anyone who is serious about the burgeoning field of communication studies. However, it is bulky and very expensive too. This is why Wiley Blackwell's decision to commission a concise version is a most welcome editorial choice.
