The Tim Burton Encyclopedia

Tim Burton is one of the most inventive film-makers, producing films with a comically dark tone, with a twisted slant on conventional story telling. Burton, who was born in 1958, is highly popular and his films have earned, collectively, over $1.7bn worldwide, excluding merchandising. The author of The Tim Burton Encyclopaedia is Samuel J. Umland, a professor and chair of the English Department at The University of Nebraska, Kearney, where he has taught film and media since 1988. I use the term, "author" advisedly. I had assumed, at first look, that Umland was the editor of it, as is common in encyclopaedias. However, it is made quite clear that he is, indeed, the author, and so, unlike most encyclopaedias, the work is his and not simply a series of contributed pieces that have been strung together in alphabetical order. Actually, there are a few contributed pieces, mostly from Mrs. Umland. Clearly, Samuel J. Umland is an enthusiast on his subject.
