"Mammalogy", as the authors tell us, "is the study of the animals that constitute the class Mammalia" or mammals as more commonly known. What then is a mammal? The short answer is that they typically possess a capacity for internal temperature regulation, typically have mammary glands with which they feed their young and typically give birth to live young. This book explores the biology of mammals in general, as well as those exhibiting less typical characteristics. First published in 1999, this, the fourth edition, differs from previous editions by reflecting significant changes in higher-level taxonomy of mammals.
