It is easy to get overwhelmed by Descartes. His ideas were and are wide ranging, his philosophical and scientific interests and agendas ambitious and his influence profound. Controversies about his work went on when he was alive and remain the focus of active scholarship and debate today. He was born in France in 1596 and died in Stockholm in 1650. Since then, his writings - philosophical, scientific, theological, and ethical, as well as correspondence - have always been in print in many languages. A wealth of information can be found, by chance and by design, on the internet, and a further wealth of reference works and critical studies and biographies exist to tantalise the librarian, researcher, scholar, teacher and student.
