In the past, many older radio flyers (such as your humble scribe) served their apprenticeships as free-flight modellers. We were mostly kids attempting-and most often failing-to get our Keil Kraft, Guillows, Sterling, Mercury and Veron rubber kits to slip the surly bonds. As I grew older and more proficient at building, and especially at choosing lighter wood, I never actually returned to free-flight -the one exception being our Delyn Club's annual indoor comp', although for that event the club issues you with an ARTF indoor rubber model. However, other modeller's enthusiasm has an uncanny way of rubbing off on even unreconstructed sports radio men such as myself. In fact, the Walsall Nats has now become one of my favourite comps of the year. I'll come clean here and admit this is partly because it allows an unashamed wallow in teenage kit nostalgia.
