I've always considered myself to be a pretty competent electronics engineer, trained and working in a broadcast environment for 35 years, however it only recently dawned on me that I'm actually a dinosaur, that is I'm an analogue engineer. What's passed me by, purely because there's been no call for it at work or in hobbies, is the exciting field of ready-built but highly programmable electronics. So, what follows here is a bit of a journey into the learning that I've been through. I may not be doing things the best way but this project has turned out predictable, repeatable and has worked well for me. Having completed the servo exerciser that I'm about to explain I've recently moved on to making telemetry units for my aircraft, the plan being that I'll follow this article up with a second covering said units. For now, however, we'll concentrate on some Arduino basics and cover the build and programming of a small unit that has two simple functions, centring and exercising.
