Mechanized campaigns battle Winter woes

Just as the snow melted and disap- peared, railroads began their next- Winter preparations. Below is a look at what several Class 1, regional and commuter railroads have planned for Winter 2001-2002. The past Winter for Canadian National was a tale of two Winters. The eastern half of the network steadily received snow with no typical thaws, resulting in above-average snow accumulation. The western half of the network received below-average snowfall and above average temperatures, so this Winter was not as big a challenge for the western half as many previous ones.
