Conduct an impromptu poll on Main Street, North America, and the same issues would figure prominently on a list of current concerns: energy costs, public safety and the environment. It is interesting, therefore, to reflect upon the recent track record of the railway industry on these fronts: 1. Fuel efficiency of the rail freight sector has significantly outperformed that of its modal competition. Between 1992 and 2002, railway energy efficiency increased 18 percent. In contrast, that same period saw overall freight energy efficiency decrease 2.2 percent.
