Evaluation of a turnout inspection system facility and methods used

Transportation Technology Center, Inc., is assisting in the development, evaluation and implementation of automated track inspection systems for the benefit of the members of the Association of American Railroads. A test facility has been established at the Transportation Technology Center, Pueblo, Colo. An inventory of components, with controlled defects, is being gathered for introduction into the turnouts during test mode, the performance evaluation of an automated inspection system compared to the manual (visual) method of inspection has been completed and the results are being reported. Data obtained is being used to establish a baseline of capability for comparing automated inspection systems.
