The last passenger train service between Bathgate and Airdrie in central Scotland ended more than 50 years ago. Freight service stopped in 1982, and the former railroad right-of-way has been used as a bicycle path in the intervening years. For residents of these towns and several others in between, travel options to the major cities of Glasgow to the west and Edinburgh to the east were pretty much limited to driving on the increasingly congested M8 motorway. But no longer.
