Every person in the railroad industry has taken part in safety meetings; memorized rules; worn safety glasses, hard hats and other protective gear; and listened to countless lectures and briefings about working safely. Sometimes safety calls for input from the scientific community. These deep thinkers may never inspect a section of track, but their expertise helps ensure the safety of many people they will never meet. To get an idea of some of the latest scientific thinking and what it means to maintenance-of-way people, RT&S looked into recent technical papers to bring some forward-looking ideas to the never-ending safety discussion.
