FEVE, Spain's State-owned metre gauge train operator, merged into Rente on 1 January 2013, is in crisis. Since 2005 passenger numbers have plummeted, and freight traffic has dwindled. Matters reached a critical level in summer 2019, with 4,000 trains cancelled in central Asturias over a period of less than four months. Why is this happening in this new win-win era for railways?
