Alert driver saved track workers' lives... by four seconds

The unnamed driver of an empty Avanti West Coast Class 390 Pendolino has been congratulated for saving two track workers' lives, by his prompt use of the train horn when he saw them standing on the track. They had just four seconds to jump out of the way. In its findings into the serious near-miss incident - at Eccles, Greater Manchester, at 0412 on July 21 - the Rail Accident Investigation Branch has repeated its plea for better supervision of vulnerable maintenance staff.
