Backing for £103m scheme to remove Metro bottlenecks

Politicians and businesses on South Tyneside are supporting a £103 million scheme that will involve three single-line sections of the Tyne & Wear Metro being dualled to provide 24,000 extra journeys a day. Current bottlenecks between Pelaw and Bede Metro stations will be eliminated by September 2022, by upgrading the existing freight line and electrifying it for passenger use.
