Fears grow that axe will fall over HS2's eastern leg

PRIME Minister Boris Johnson and Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps have dropped their heaviest hints to date that the Government will not proceed with the eastern leg of HS2 Phase 2b. References to this planned section of the route between Leeds and the West Midlands were conspicuously absent - both in Johnson's keynote speech to the Conservative party conference on October 6 and in an appearance made by Shapps at a fringe event.
