The UK rail engineering sector has a workforce of around 250,000. Those who could work for HS2 are track (38,300), electrification and plant (4,200), signalling and telecoms (14,100), and traction and rolling stock (15,800). Around 23% of the total sector workforce is employed on capital projects (around 55,000), and half are based in London and the South East. The forecast for rail engineering investment fluctuates, but a distinct decline is expected from 2030 onwards, possibly because of government uncertainty over funding. Investment in train building is also erratic.
