NOT a day goes by without our news feeds and TV screens being filled with the consequences of the chronic and increasingly alarming shortage of lorry drivers. There's been talk of a shortage of 100,000 drivers for many years now, but somehow we have muddled through without major shortages on supermarket shelves or fuel forecourts. Now we have been tipped over that knife-edge into chaos by the 'perfect storm' of Brexit, Coronavirus, and changing lifestyles making lorry driving an unattractive career. Headline-grabbing shortages of fuel, McDonald's milkshakes, Nandos chicken, beer at Wetherspoons and even Haribo sweets are making the public (voters!) feel the pain of a problem that has been coming for a long time -way before the pandemic started, whatever Grant Shapps might have us believe.
