ASLEF claims victory in COVID-19 absence policy

Train drivers' union ASLEF has declared victory over London Underground management, after forcing a U-turn on a proposed policy that it says would have led to Tube drivers being disciplined for following COVID-19 rules. According to the union, LU managers had announced in a meeting with ASLEF on July 1 that it would begin to count COVID- 19-related absence from work as an item under LU's Attendance at Work procedure. ASLEF says this would have left drivers facing disciplinary action if they either caught COVID-19 or were instructed to self-isolate by the NHS Track and Trace app. The union further claims that LU managers suggested to its members that they should turn off the COVID app, in what it describes as "a clear attempt to push staff to ignore the law on self-isolation".
