The history of Gasworks Tunnel encompasses infrastructure construction, operation and alteration. It also includes societal change, human action and emotion, and tragedy.The Great Northern Railway (GNR) line was authorised in 1846, with the work on its southern end in London - including the tunnel taking the line under the Regents canal and other industrial buildings - contracted to John Jay and sub-contracted to a Messrs Hodge.As was the case everywhere, these works bore considerable risk to the navvies. In December 1850 Abel Wynne, an experienced miner who had worked on the London & Birmingham Railway's Kilsby tunnel, was heading a team installing wooden beams that held the roof up, so that brickwork could be installed.
