SWR's termination of '442' refurbishment saves £24m

WITHDRAWING the Class 442 Wessex Electrics fleet before it fully re-entered traffic with South Western Railway is expected to save around £8 million per year, Rail Minister Chris Heaton-Harris stated on April 27. Eighteen five-car electric multiple units, refurbished and fitted with new AC traction equipment, had been due to enter service on the London Waterloo-Portsmouth route.
