Wagons and ballast removed after oil train derailment

A rail crane has lifted all the derailed oil wagons from Morlais Junction, near Llangennech in South Wales, following August 26's derailment and fire (RAIL 913). Network Rail said two of the nine wagons that derailed were cut up on site because they were so damaged. The remaining seven were lifted and taken away by road. Lifting started on September 1 and was complete by September 8. Work is now concentrating on removing 2,000 tonnes of ballast contaminated by the oil train's load of diesel. NR told RAIL that the derailment and fire destroyed 250 metres of track. Spokesman Cal Jones said it was replacing 350 metres but would need to wait for new switches to be made and a new crossing to be cast to replace the points destroyed.
