Talks on replacements for Class 171s

Discussions on what will replace the Southern Class 171 fleet when it transfers to East Midlands Railway are under way between Government and the operator. Of the 20 trains in use with Southern, 12 will move to EMR in 2022 and be converted to Class 170s, which means the Uckfield Line will require replacement traction. The '171s' are also used on the Ashford-Eastbourne, Ashford-Rye and Ashford-Hastings services.
