Road-rail-ferry service plan for cross-Channel trailers

Brittany Ferries is planning a new multimodal cross-Channel freight service. Launching next year, it will combine rail, road and sea to transport unaccompanied goods trailers from the UK via Cherbourg to Bayonne on the French Atlantic coast. It will mainly be used to replace road lorries to and from Spain and Portugal. Combined with new ferries powered by LNG instead of conventional marine oil, Brittany Ferries says this will offer lower emissions than transport by road. A fifth of Brittany Ferries traffic is freight. Each trailer that travels unaccompanied (without a tractor unit and driver) would take a fifth less garage space on the ferry.
