Network Rail accepts blame for Eastleigh derailment

NETWORK Rail has admitted that an infrastructure failure caused a freight train to derail at Eastleigh on January 28, closing the main line between London and Southampton for six days (RAIL 898), A track engineer has told RAIL that is was "an accident waiting to happen" and that maintenance standards were "shockingly inept". Network Rail said bolts securing the rail to a concrete sleeper failed, and pushed outwards from the track as the heavy Freightliner train crossed the junction south of the station on its way to Southampton docks.
