WELCOME to the RAIL Crossword. In this issue, we're giving away copies of A New Illustrated History of Her Majesty's Railway Inspectorate from 1840 to three successful solvers, courtesy of Steam World Publishing. The UK railway is the safest in Europe, and Her Majesty's Railway Inspectorate's contribution has been critical. It is the second oldest railway organisation - only the British Transport Police (dating from 1826) is older. Authors Ian Prosser CBE and David Keay examine all aspects of our railway's long (and ongoing) progress in improving safety. Successes and setbacks are all covered and HMRI's more controversial history in the later 1990s and early 2000s (at the time of accidents such as Ladbroke Grove and Hatfield) is told candidly.
