South Western Railway is in a mess. Performance has been declining for years. Passenger satisfaction is at a record low. What used to be Britain's largest and most profitable rail franchise lost £137 million last year. Earlier this month, the company wrote to staff admitting that its contract could be terminated, with operation of services handed back to Government.
