RECENTLY, a reader was travelling to the West Country from Gatwick Airport. He already possessed a ticket from Reading and required only a single to Reading on the 0903 through train. He knew that with a Senior Railcard, an Off-Peak Day Single valid from 0900 is only £13. However, the ticket machine showed the fare as £19.70, with the railcard option greyed out. He asked a roving member of staff, who said that this was because his Senior Railcard isn't valid until 0930. Our reader knew this was wrong. For journeys within the London & South East area a Senior Railcard is available from the time the OP fare is valid, which (as said above) for this journey is 0900.
